  38.      1. What is a Windows driver?
  39.         A Windows driver is a "translation program" that helps
  40.         Microsoft Windows and Windows-for-Workgroups communicate with
  41.         devices attached to your computer. Such devices may include
  42.         modems, CD-ROMs, video cards, and hard drives.
  43.  
  44.      2. What is the Windows 32-bit disk access driver?
  45.         This is a driver that allows Windows to communicate with your
  46.         hard disc directly (in protected mode) rather than going
  47.         through DOS or through your system BIOS. This means that your
  48.         CPU remains in 32-bit mode (if it supports this mode) rather
  49.         than slowing to 16-bit mode.

  51.         The 32-bit drive access driver that Microsoft created for
  52.         Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is named *WDCTRL.
  53.         Unfortunately, this driver does not work with hard drives
  54.         larger than 528 Mbytes.

  56.      3. What is SEG32BIT.386?
  57.         SEG32BIT is Seagate's version of a Windows driver that
  58.         replaces the generic driver, *WDCTRL. It is designed
  59.         specifically to work with ATA (IDE) drives larger than 528
  60.         Mbytes up to 8.4GB. It also configures your computer to take
  61.         advantage of any high-speed or LBA data transfer modes
  62.         supported by your computer and your hard drive(s).
  63.  
  64.      4. Why should I use SEG32BIT.386?
  65.         The Microsoft 32-bit disc access driver does not work with ATA
  66.         (IDE) hard drives larger than 528 Mbytes. The Seagate driver
  67.         does. SEG32BIT also supports advanced disc access features
  68.         that may significantly improve the performance of your drive.
  69.         These features are not supported by the Microsoft 32-bit
  70.         driver.

  72.         Note. If your computer and drive host adapter do not support
  73.               32-bit addressing or advanced data transfer modes, you
  74.               do not need to use this driver.

  76.      5. Does SEG32BIT work with any hard drive?
  77.         As long as your computer contains at least one Seagate ATA
  78.         (IDE) hard drive, SEG32BIT can be used for 32-bit disc access
  79.         with any ATA (IDE) hard drive attached to that computer.

  81.      6. How much will my disc performance improve if I use SEG32BIT?
  82.         Once installed, SEG32BIT optimizes the data transfers to and
  83.         from your drive, if your system and drive support high-speed
  84.         data access features. The increase in performance will vary
  85.         depending on many factors, including the system architecture,
  86.         bus speed, interface chip manufacturer and version level.

  90. Features of the SEG32BIT driver
  91. -------------------------------
  92.      *  Supports 32-bit drive access - Speeds up data access by
  93.         allowing the computer to choose the most efficient disc access
  94.         method.
  95.  
  96.      *  Supports drives larger than 528 Mbytes up to 8.4GB.
  97.  
  98.      *  Supports Read/Write Multiple - Speeds up data access by
  99.         allowing the drive and computer to send more than one sector
  100.         of data for each system interrupt. This feature is drive-
  101.         dependent and will be automatically detected by the driver if
  102.         it is available. It is only supported by computers with '386
  103.         and later CPU chips.
  104.  
  105.      *  Supports PIO Modes 3 and 4 - Speeds up data transfers by
  106.         minimizing the amount of time between blocks of data
  107.         transferred to or from the drive.
  108.  
  109.         Note. PIO Modes 3 and 4 can only be implemented if they are
  110.               supported by the drives, the drive controller, and the
  111.               host computer. In addition, the host computer must have
  112.               a PCI bus or VL (Local bus) architecture.

  114.      *  When Windows or Windows for Workgroups is loaded, SEG32BIT
  115.         automatically determines which features can be implemented.
  116.         SEG32BIT lists those features on the screen when Windows is
  117.         booted up.

  119. ======================================================================
  120.  
  121. SEG32BIT compatibility issues
  122. -----------------------------
  123.      1. Compatible system software:
  124.         Microsoft Windows version 3.1
  125.         Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.11
  126.  
  127.      2. Compatible bus types:
  128.         ISA, EISA, VL and PCI bus architectures.
  129.  
  130.      3. Compatible hard drives:
  131.         SEG32BIT is compatible with most ATA (IDE) hard drives, but
  132.         can only be installed if a Seagate drive has been attached to
  133.         and recognized by the host computer.
  134.  
  135.      4. Possible driver conflicts:
  136.         CD-ROM Drives - You cannot attach a CD-ROM drive to the same
  137.         ATA cable as your hard drive if you are using the SEG32BIT
  138.         driver and have the 32 bit drive access option enabled (The
  139.         CD-ROM is usable if the 32 bit drive access option is
  140.         disabled).

  142.      5. Third-party disc access Drivers:
  143.         Disk-access drivers provided by some vendors of ATA Host
  144.         Adapters cannot be used in conjunction with SEG32BIT. These
  145.         drivers may conflict with or disable SEG32BIT, resulting in
  146.         lower system performance. Only one 32-bit disc-access driver
  147.         may be run within a Windows session.
  148.  
  149.      6. Drive Controller Interface Chips Supported:
  150.         ADI/2 & 3  - VESA bus
  151.         CMD 640B - PCI & VESA buses
  152.         DTC 803 - VESA bus
  153.  
  154.      7. I/O Port supported:
  155.         The SEG32BIT driver only supports hard drives attached to the
  156.         primary port address (1F0 hex)
  157.

  159.  
  160. Installing the SEG32BIT Driver
  161. ------------------------------
  162.       SEG32BIT may be installed using three possible methods:
  163.  
  164.       - using DiscWizard v2.4 or Disk Manager v9.44s+ select  Advanced 
  165.         option menu then Maintenance
  166.       - using STSETUP.EXE (see below)
  167.       - manually by editing the Windows 3.1x SYSTEM.INI file (see
  168.         below)
  169.  
  170.    If the file STSETUP.EXE exists on the floppy or in the download file,
  171.    use it for a quick and easy installation.
  172.  
  173.    Install the SEG32BIT.386 driver as follows:
  174.  
  175.       1. Start Windows.
  176.  
  177.       2. From the Program Manager menu, select File.
  178.  
  179.       3. Select Run.
  180.  
  181.       4. Insert the Seagate software diskette into the diskette
  182.          drive (assumed to be drive A).
  183.  
  184.       5. In the command line box, type  a:\stsetup.
  185.  
  186.       6. Read the license agreement that appears on the screen. If you
  187.          agree to the terms, select ACCEPT AGREEMENT to continue.
  188.  
  189.       7. The next screen lists the features the SEG32BIT.386 driver
  190.          supports. If your computer supports these features,
  191.          SEG32BIT.386 will enable them in 32-bit disc access mode for
  192.          all drives that support them. Select Install Driver to
  193.          continue.
  194.  
  195.       8. After the driver is installed, the program automatically
  196.          re-enables 32-bit disc access in the Windows control panel.
  197.          Alternatively, you can do this manually, after exiting the
  198.          stsetup program.
  199.  
  200.    To manually install the SEG32BIT 32-bit disk access file:
  201.  
  202.       1. Open the SYSTEM.INI file with a standard text editor such as
  203.          NotePad or DOS Edit.
  204.  
  205.       2. Go to the section [386Enh] and place a semicolon (;) in front
  206.          of the line "device=*wdctrl" which is Windows' default 32-bit
  207.          disk access driver.
  208.  
  209.       3. Add a new line below (without quotes) the original driver as
  210.          "device=seg32bit.386; Seagate 32 bit disk access driver"
  211.  
  212.       4. Save the file and restart Windows.  Windows will only allow
  213.          one disk access driver to be installed.  A startup error
  214.          message will be displayed if there is another third party
  215.          driver installed.  Other third drivers may include the
  216.          following: mh32bit.386, wdcdrv.386, pti13.386, ptictrl.386,
  217.          eide2300.386, cpqint13.386, cpqwtl.386, flexidrv.386,
  218.          optivic.386, wdctrl32.386, cmdint13.386, cmd640x.386.,
  219.          adi2w102.386, wineide.386, shdrv.386, ide_win.386, sgat.386,
  220.          ontrackw.386.  If any of these drivers are present, contact
  221.          their respective vendors for additional instructions that may
  222.          be pertinent to your system configuration.

  224.      5.  Start the Windows Control Panel and select the 386 Enhanced
  225.          icon.
  226.  
  227.      6.  Select Virual Memory and then Change>>.
  228.  
  229.      7.  Check the selection box at the bottom of the panel "Use 32 Bit
  230.          Disk Access"
  231.  
  232.      8.  Restart Windows by following the system message instructions.

  238.       The latest version of the SEG32BIT driver has been shipped on
  239.       your drive. If this software is updated, the updated version
